Explaining My Heart

Explaining My Heart

November 11, 2025

Most people think I care about "law firm business" because I like strategy, systems, and numbers.

I do like those things. But that's not why I care this much.

I care because behind every small firm there is a human being trying to hold a lot together: Clients, partners, staff, kids, aging parents, a mortgage, a reputation, and their own sense of who they are.

I've been in that place where the business side quietly starts to swallow everything else.

You don't build a law firm just to look good on LinkedIn.

You build it because there are people you love, principles you live by, and clients whose lives are genuinely altered by the work you do.

Somewhere along the way, the mental load and ongoing sacrifice of running the firm can get so heavy that you forget what this was supposed to make possible in your life.

I've gone through that myself.

I've had seasons where I was working harder than ever, technically "making progress" yet feeling strangely unsatisfying. Revenue was up, but my attention was scattered, my health took a hit. I actually ended up having emergency surgery in left eye to prevent me going blind. And the people I cared about were getting what was left of me, not the best of me.

That tension forced me to ask harder questions than "How do I grow?" Questions like:

  • What is all this for?
  • Who am I becoming as I build this?
  • At what point does "providing for my family" quietly become "hiding" behind work?

What I came to believe, and what sits at the heart of my business, is this:

Prosperity is only true prosperity when it serves love, not when it displaces it.

For me, that means a few things:

  • A firm is successful when it gives you more presence with the people you love, not less.
  • Systems, leverage, and profit are tools to protect what matters, not trophies to impress people who don't.
  • Growth is only "growth" if it enlarges both your capacity to serve clients and your capacity to live a life you actually want.

I care so much about the "boring" business side of law firms because I've felt what happens when it's neglected.

Good people burn out.
Families carry the cost.
Principled lawyers start quietly resenting the very firms they created.

I don't want that for you.

The emails I send each week are my way of trying to pass on what I've learned the hard way: a firm can be both profitable and deeply humane. You do not have to choose between doing great work, making great money, and being a present human being.

That's the core belief: your business should be an expression of your love and your values, not a threat to them.

If this resonates, hit reply and tell me where the tension shows up most for you right now: cashflow, people, time, or just the emotional weight of carrying it all.

I read every reply, and it helps me shape what I send you next.

Remember: the greatest wealth you will ever possess is not in your bank account, your clients, or your ventures, but in the quiet moments of love, when you are truly present with those who matter most.

You're not just building a business.
You're living a life.

And just by the fact that you've attracted my newsletter into your world, means you're on the right path.

More next Tuesday
